What is roaming?

‘Roaming’ occurs when you take your UK mobile phone abroad and use it on an overseas mobile network. Because roaming isn’t regulated, UK mobile phone networks can charge whatever they want, which means you can end up paying a lot more than you might have bargained for.

What does roaming cost?

Using a normal mobile phone abroad can cost up to 10 times more than it would cost in the UK! Not only are outgoing calls more expensive, but you can also pay up to £1.90 just to receive incoming calls. You will also have to pay for picking up your voice mail. With Sim4Roaming roaming charges are either much lower or free.

Why is roaming so expensive?

It’s expensive because it’s unregulated and mobile phone network operators see it as an opportunity to make easy money.

Will roaming charges come down?

Not for the foreseeable future. The Government has recently announced that it has no intention of regulating the industry, which means mobile phone network operators are under no pressure to reduce their roaming charges.

Which Sim4Roaming product is for me?

If you have an unlocked mobile phone, you can experience the benefits of Sim4Roaming by simply using a Sim4Roaming SIM. However, while this is the cheapest way to reduce the cost of making and receiving mobile phone calls abroad, there are extra advantages in opting for a Sim4Roaming handset and SIM. Not only are there security benefits in not taking an expensive mobile phone abroad, but the Sim4Roaming handset is also configured to ensure that making and receiving calls abroad is as easy as possible and incorporates some great features, including 8-way conference calling and call recording. Additionally, if you’re going to certain countries, like the USA, Canada or the Caribbean, you’ll need a tri-band or a quad-band phone. Most normal mobile phones are not tri-or quad-band, but the Sim4Roaming handset is.

What is an unlocked phone?

Some mobile phones are “locked” to a specific network. This means that you can only use network-specific SIM cards. Unlocking a phone removes this lock and enables it to be used with any SIM card. Unlocking is completely legal, does not harm your phone and only takes a few minutes to do. Most high street mobile phone retailers can unlock phones; the process will take around 10 minutes and usually costs around £10.

Does the caller who phones you pay a high tariff for the call?

The SIM4Roaming uses a normal UK mobile number. People calling the SIM4Roaming should only pay the same rate as if they were calling a mobile phone in the UK. If the caller has cross-network inclusive minutes on their normal mobile phone they may be able to use these to call the SIM4Roaming number. The SIM4Roaming uses an 07924 number so the caller should check with their operator to see if these calls will be included.

Is there an expiry period on the SIM4Roaming card?

The credit on a SIM4Roaming card is valid for a period of 12 months. If credit is not used up within this time it will be lost and the SIM card will become inactive.

Can SIM4Roaming products be used as a GPRS data modem?

This service is not currently available, although it is something we’re hoping to offer shortly.
